Father's Day in Carcross

We spent Father's Day down in Carcross at Hunter's request. He has discovered that it is a great place for bike riding because the street's are paved yet quiet enough that he is allowed to ride on the road all through town. He really enjoys playing "police bikes" and riding up and down the streets looking for bad guys and being out on calls. It's also handy that there is an RCMP station there and the officers are often out on patrol.

We stopped in at the new (just opened last year) carving house and got to chat with Keith Smarch, a world renowned carver of coastal Tlingit art. He created the totem poles at the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre and is now working on all of the carvings for the Carcross Tagish Potlatch House that is scheduled to open next year. (

Tim, being the curious carver that he is, asked alot of questions and was invited by Keith to come and carve with him - what an awesome opportunity! (I'm also quite excited as this is my favourite form of art so maybe more can come home...)

Carcross is at the foot of Lake Bennett and has an amazing beach. We venture here often in the summer. It is also a fairly windy location so we brought our kites with us to make the best of the wind.

Hunter had a new kite from a birthday party the day before and was quite excited when he was able to get it up and running. He really enjoyed running up and down the beach with his kite...

Tim brought out one of the foils that we have owned for a long time (about 16 years...). In a good wind they are amazing to fly and it makes you truly feel like you are harnessing the wind.

Pretty awesome backdrop for kite flying! Hunter quickly became enthralled with the foil and wanted to join in with dad... We even had people walking down the beach to watch!

I enjoyed being the photographer and even had some fun making the most of the sunny day and amazing cloud formations.
