Fishing in Haines

To finish off our summer adventures we went fishing in Haines for a week in the middle of August (which is really the start of fall here...). We went down on the monday of the Yukon Discovery Day long weekend and were able to get a spot in the campground right beside the river. It's the first time we've stayed there and it was fabulous! So nice to come and go from the river/lake all day long...

yep - that's a "pixie" fish hook in his nose
The bears were out and fabulous to watch. There was a Mom with 2 cubs and a Mom with 3 cubs that we saw daily - often multiple times a day - as they went about their fishing and playing!

Hunter is now an official Alaskan Salmon Fisherman - he caught his own salmon from cast to net and was soooooo proud :)

The weather held up for most of our week. Lots of grey and overcast but very little rain which made it a good week for everyone...

We took the canoe out on the lake twice to go and check out the Sockeye Salmon spawning grounds. It was amazing to see the colours - green heads & tails and RED RED bodies - and SOOO many of them at once.... They were all busy scurrying around dropping their eggs and then protecting them from others fish.

We were lucky to see a few blue herons hanging out with the spawning Sockeye - so beautiful and BIG

Hunter had a great time fishing, bike riding, canoeing and hiking (him carrying one of the canoeing barrels below). It was a nice quiet 5 days as a family - very restful.
