When we went to Haines last year at labour day, it was as perfect as perfect could be; indian summer weather, bear sightings everywhere and more fish than you knew what to do with. We headed out last weekend to Haines for the Sockeye Salmon run and had another great time. The weather was not as great - mostly overcast with some wind. The fishing was better and everyone still came away with smiles (oh, and fish for the freezer)...
We camped in a pull-out at the side of the road next to the ocean and just down from the Chilkoot River. The Salmon come in from the ocean, head up the river, land in Chilkoot Lake and then head to some small tributaries off the lake to spawn. 
We had fun exploring the ocean shore and the creek that ran from a waterfall on one side of the road out to the ocean (through a culvert under the road - guess who had the fun of following that path while the photographer documented the experience...)
We arrived Friday night and fished for a few hours, catching lots of pinks and a few Dolly Varden (a type of trout). Saturday morning we were back at it early, with a break for afternoon play time, and then more fishing in the evening.
Tim probably reeled in over 50 fish, many of which you couldn't keep because you "snagged them" - i.e. the lure caught them somewhere other than on the head. The sheer volume of cast, reel and catch keeps anyone interested until they get a keeper.
Hunter had his trusty scooby doo rod out and had fun casting out at times. He was also in charge of returning the snagged fish back into the ocean and "bonking" the keepers (we won't talk about my concerns about the sheer joy that my 6 year old son got out of wacking fish on the head to kill them!).
