We said goodbye to Lake Powell in the midst of a torrential rain storm and headed further east towards Blanding. We had hoped to take the ferry and cut out a few hours of driving but we missed it by 15 minutes and the next one was a 2 hour wait... The upside was that we drove by a bunch of canyons we were interested in and the rain was slowing so we all ventured out.
Leprechaun Canyon is a great slot canyon - to do it fully,
one would hike to the top of the trail and then rappel in. Due to all of the rains, we decided to just hike it from the bottom... it was still a great time :)We started out bushwacking through some tall willows and then made it up onto a nice slickrock plateau. Some good climbing and meandering through the cactus' until we found the path back to the river bottom.
Under normal circumstances there isn't much water here, however due to the storms there was over a foot. We wandered through one canyon until we got stuck with a small crack and a waterfall. We backtracked, climbed up a
section (Hunter was thrilled to get to use the rope and climb) and then found these great big canyon sections (referred to as "subways"). Hunter and Dad turned the water bottle into a soccer ball and had fun kicking it up the canyon. On the return trip it turned into a boat and was floated down the water sections.It was about 2 hours round trip and the activity was welcomed after 1.5 days of rain and car travel...
Hunter promptly fell asleep and we drove to the hotel in Blanding.
